National Tree Day 2011 – A Great Success!

National Tree Day on Mount Majura – July 31st 2011

Blue Gum School Students July 29, 2011

National Tree Day started early on the morning of Friday 29th, July when students, teachers and parents of the Hackett Blue Gum School planted more than 110 seedlings.  Some of these enthusiastic planters came back for more on Sunday to help with the main National Tree Day planting event.

Conditions were fine on official National Tree Day, Sunday 31st July, when over 120 volunteers from Hackett and other parts of north Canberra joined Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher to plant over 450 seedlings of local trees, shrubs, flowers and ground cover plants.  Unlike 2010 when volunteers where drenched and frozen by rain and storms, this year the weather stayed dry and mild.

Thank you to all who helped to make National Tree Day 2011 on Mount Majura a wonderful experience and great success.

No one is too young to plant a tree!

A special thank you to the Majura Mountain Scouts who provided a BBQ for participants as well as many volunteer tree planters.

Majura Mountain Scouts provided a BBQ which was much appreciated by the hungry volunteers

Many thanks to the Gunghalin Eagles Rugby Club who helped dig holes, Greening Australia for raising the seedlings from locally collected seeds, to ACT Parks, Conservation and Lands for providing crucial on-site support,  to the North Canberra Community Council and the Molonglo Catchment Group for financial support and to many volunteers of Friends of Mount Majura, the Mount Ainslie Weeders, the Watson Woodland Working Group and the Hackett Community Association for help during and prior to the event.
