Adult male Gang-gang Cockatoo, Callocephalum fimbriatum with its bright red helmet topped by a filamentous crest (Canberra nature map). The main habitat of the species is the temperate forest of Australia’s Southeast. Following the devastating 2019 /20 fires that destroyed its habitat, the species was declared Endangered under Federal legislation in March 2022.

With over two hundred recorded species, Canberra and the surrounding region have the richest bird life of any Australian capital city. Roughly half – 112 species – have been recorded on Mt Majura.
