Deed of Agreement to mitigate impact of development (18 March 2010)

The North Canberra Community Council, Watson Community Association, Friends of Mount Majura, The Conservation Council ACT Region and the Village Building Company have signed a Deed of agreement to mitigate environmental and traffic impacts associated with The Fair residential development on the Australian Heritage Village site in north Watson. The development site is situated on the northwest corner of Mt Majura abutting nature reserve in the east and the south.

The development application was approved by ACTPLA in 2nd March 2010, with conditions which were only administrative in nature. These conditions did not address any of the substantive environmental or traffic concerns of the community groups. Rather than going directly to appeal, the NCCC and its co-joined parties took the decision to consult with the Village Building Company in an attempt to ameliorate our concerns. The Deed of agreement signed on 9 March  2010 is the result of this consultation.

Articles outlining some of the concerns raised in the terms of agreement were published by the Canberra Times on 12 March 2010  and the City Chronicle on 16 March 2010.
