World Environment Day 2007: Walk and talk

Friends of Mt Majura (FOMM) warmly invite you to celebrate World Environment Day 2007 with a Walk Talk & Tea on Mt Majura.

Sunday 3rd June 1.00 – 3.30 pm

Meet at Helms Place off Rivett St, Hackett

Enjoy a winter walk in one of Canberra’s favourite bushland reserves. See the progress of work done by FoMM and learn about the processes involved in the rehabilitation of degraded sites. The walk will take about two hours and features great views. We will visit several project sites of Friends of Mt Majura and enjoy a cup of tea at our stop on Majura ridge.

Helms Place.   At our first stop we will see the re-grassing of compacted ground.

Drainage Ditch. Next we will see birds bathing in water uncovered by the removal of weedy vines.

Former Sheep Camp. We then will climb the popular Casuarina trail to the ridge. Here is one of our most ambitious projects – a hillside infested with paddock weeds – legacy from a sheep-grazing past. You will see the progress of 3 years work of removing weeds and direct seeding native ground cover plants and you’ll learn of the processes involved in revegetation.

Project Dragonfly. On our way back we’ll have a glimpse at Majura Dams where volunteers started rehabilitation work in October 2005.
