Weeding with a View – 2nd Take (18/10/2026)

Regeneration Stock Camp South Sept 2026

Regeneration of the old Stock Camp after more than a decade of hand weeding; Mount Ainslie in the south (September 2026, J. Zeil).

Following a successful session in September, the Friends of Mt Majura will host a second hand weeding party at the old stock camp.

When: Sunday, 18th October, from 9am to 12noon (note: FoMM’s work parties switch to morning sessions during the daylight saving months).

Where: Meet at 9am at Mount Majura Nature reserve gate car park, Mackenzie St near Grayson St, Hackett; click on this map to view the meeting point.

What: At the gate, we will distribute small mattocks to each of you to carry.

Walk together for about 30 minutes, along Blue Metal Road then veer right at a large water tank and continue uphill to the ridge top where there is great view eastward across the Majura valley.

Oldest Apple Box, Eucalyptus bridgesiana

Is this the oldest Apple Box in Canberra? The tree grows on the south slope just downhill of the old stock camp with a measured circumference of 7.2 meters at 1.3 meters above ground. Like it on Canberra Nature Map

If you miss the group at 9am, use below Google maps links to find the weeding site: 1. Walking from Mackenzie St car park; 2. Walking from the Kellaway St car park

Aim: to remove as many herbaceous weeds as possible before they flower and produce seeds.

The main weeds are several species of thistles including Variegated thistle, Horehound and Buchan Weed.

Bring: Enthusiasm, water to drink, sun protection, gloves, and your favourite weeding tool if you prefer to BYO; wear gardening clothes and sturdy shoes.

We share with you: a warm welcome, gloves, tools such as light mattocks, & delicious cake for a sociable morning tea.
